MEDICA tradefair 2019

The leading international trade fair, MEDICA, was held in Düsseldorf, Germany, from the 18th to the 21st of November. This time it coincided with COMPAMED, the leading trade fair for the medical technology manufacturing supplier market. Under the slogan “Be Part of the No.1”, Medica and Compamed reached a new record in participation with 121.000 visitors from 170 countries.

Aside from discussing several current issues, such as the increasing trade restrictions as well as the uncertainty in regards to Brexit, visitors of the trade fair discovered the latest innovations in the medical sector brought by the leading edge technology. More and more innovations are now software-driven, which proves that artificial intelligence has definitely come to stay. The practical use of AI in digital pathology was explored in the Medica Labmed Forum. Likewise, app-development companies took advantage of the platform Medica offers to present their new apps with the hope of getting the interest of investors. Some of the functions offered by these apps were to monitor various body parameters and to help patients go through the rehabilitation process effortlessly thanks to virtual reality.

Another focal point at Medica was the implementation of robotics in the medical sector. Several innovations were presented at the trade fair. One of them was “LBR Med”, a lightweight medical robot by KUKA. Visitors also witnessed a robot platform with magnetic capsules that detects colon cancer in the early stages and a home-care robot, Temi, aimed at helping elderly people remain in their own homes. However, as Robert Geiger (Managing Director of Aktormed) explained, robots are not intended to replace human doctors but, instead, to provide them with optimal support and to reduce the strain on medical personnel as much as possible.
